New York's online sports betting market has cooled off from betting since the Super Bowl, but a recent weekly report confirmed that activity has picked up speed again. The New York State Game Commission announced on February 26, 2023 that nine sportsbooks collected a total of $353 million in betting handles during the week.
It has been more than 13 months since Empire State began accepting legal online sports betting as part of the new restricted model market. The online sector allows a total of nine sportsbooks to accept and offer bets in the state, generating more than US$700 million in tax revenue for the state's economy in the first 12 months of operation.
In the week ending February 27, 2023, nine mobile bookmakers in New York State had a total of $353.8 million in bets, according to a Friday report by the New York State Game Commission. The figure was $339.6 million for the week after the Super Bowl, slightly improving after a major decline recorded the previous week.
Meanwhile, in terms of total game volume for the week of February 26, nine sportsbooks reported pre-tax earnings of US$28.4 million, or about 8%. It also rose slightly from the previous week's tally of $23 million. It should also be noted that New York's tax rate on mobile sports betting wins is the highest in the country at 51%.
During the week, Panduel remained the preferred choice among betters, collecting the biggest betting handle of $146.5 million in volume and $11.7 million in revenue. DraftKings again came in second with $115 million in betting and $9.8 million in GGR, while Caesars Sportsbook came in third with $46 million in betting and close to $3 million in revenue.
The numbers for the week of February 26, 2023 come after the NFL Season and the Super Bowl. The two are significant betting targets for operators in the market, with betting activity declining at the end of the season. But the March frenzy is just around the corner, and New Yorkers are quite interested in betting on the annual college basketball tournament.
It should also be stated that Empire State has explored potential changes to the online sports betting market. Last week, the New York State Athletic Conference voted almost unanimously in favor of stricter regulations on sports betting advertising. The new rules will limit sports betting advertising, marketing and promotion amid concerns about sports betting advertising and marketing for universities and university campuses.
